Bellis recovering well in London

Jonny Bellis

Manx cyclist Jonny Bellis is "stable and progressing well" in a London hospital following a motor scooter accident in Italy in September.

The 21-year-old suffered a fractured skull and bruising to his brain when he crashed in Tuscany prior to the road world championships.

Having being in a medically induced coma, the recovery signs are positive.

A British Cycling statement revealed Bellis had been assigned his own physio and his rehab programme had begun.

Bellis competed in the road race at last year's Beijing Olympics and is a three-time European track champion, as well as a bronze medal winner at the Under-23 world road championships in 2007 and bronze and silver medallist at the world junior championships.

He is regarded as one of British Cycling's best academy products and had just completed his first full season as a professional with Danish team Saxo Bank when the accident happened near the British training base in Quarrata.

The Isle of Man star had an operation to relieve pressure on his brain a few hours after the accident and was then put in an induced coma for three weeks in the Florence hospital.

Doctors then carried out operations to remove a blood clot as his recovery progressed before being transported to London this week.
