GB trio win pursuit in Melbourne

Lizzie Armitstead

Britain's Lizzie Armitstead, Katie Colclough and Joanna Rowsell won the women's team pursuit on the final day of the World Cup event in Melbourne.

The GB trio won in three minutes 29.890 seconds, ahead of Australia's Josephine Tomic, Sarah Kent and Ashlee Ankudin.

The victory marked a superb recovery for Armitstead to win her second gold in Australia, after a crash on day two required eight stitches in her arm.

The three-day meeting was the second of five Track World Cup events.

Britain's women have now won team pursuit gold in back-to-back World Cup finals, having done the same at the opening World Cup event in Manchester three weeks ago.

Armitstead, who also triumphed in the scratch race in Melbourne on Thursday, finished the Melbourne World Cup stage with two gold medals to add to her three from Manchester.

She also triumphed in the scratch race in Melbourne on Thursday, while Rowsell added team pursuit gold to her individual pursuit title from the opening day.

The three women are the only Britons competing in Melbourne as GB's Olympic medallists from Beijing opted to miss the event.

Australia's national team claimed overall victory in Melbourne, edging out compatriots Team Toshiba by 112 points to 98 over the three days.

The World Cup continues with events in Columbia, Beijing and Copenhagen before the World Championships in Pruszkow, Poland, in March.
