Cooke crowned World Cup champion

Nicole Cooke has repeated her World Cup feat of 2003 Nicole Cooke claimed the World Cup title on Sunday after a fourth place in the penultimate event of the 12-race series, the Lowland Rotterdam Tour.

The 23-year-old from Wales entered the Holland race with a healthy 153-point lead in the World Cup standings.

Although T-Mobile rider Ina Teutenberg won the race, Cooke's fourth place was enough to see off overall points rivals Judith Arndt and Susanne Ljunskog.

The final World Cup race is the Rund um die Nürnberger Altstadt on Sunday.

With 150 points, double the usual 75 on offer, awarded to the winner of the last World Cup leg, Cooke cannot now be overtaken regardless of where she finishes next week.

The Germany leg of the series will now be something of a victory parade for Cooke, although her Univega team is still battling it out for the team title.

"I am absolutely thrilled to win the World Cup, it was a fantastic performance by the whole team," Cooke said.

"It would have been nice to win today but the overall was far more important.

"I shall enjoy next week's final round in Germany, the pressure is now off me but we have the team win to secure ahead of T-Mobile."

Cooke was last World Cup winner in 2003, when she became the youngest ever rider to win the award and the first Briton.
