Chargers find form to maul Jets

San Diego kick-started their season with a 48-29 thrashing of the New York Jets in Monday's NFL game.

Philip Rivers threw for three touchdowns and LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for two more at Giants Stadium.

Tipped for the Super Bowl, the Chargers bounced back from two defeats to send the Jets to their second loss in three games under new QB Brett Favre.

"To get that first win is a relief," said Tomlinson. "If we'd lost, I don't know what was going to happen."

Favre wound up 30-for-42 for 271 yards and threw for three TDs but was intercepted twice and sacked four times.

The Jets scored 15 points in the final quarter but never got within two touchdowns of the lead in the second half.

"They were very active defensively and ruffled us a little bit protection-wise," Favre said.

The pick of the weekend's games saw Miami end New England's run of 21 straight regular-season wins.

Ronnie Brown runs in a touchdown for Miami

Running back Ronnie Brown ran in a team-record four touchdowns and threw for another in a 38-13 rout.

He scored on runs of two, 15, five and 62 yards and completed a 19-yard TD pass for the Dolphins (1-2).

New England, playing for a second full game without injured quarterback Tom Brady, never led at Gillette Stadium.

Their only TD came on a five-yard pass from Brady's replacement Matt Cassel to Jabar Gaffney in the third quarter. Stephen Gostkowski added two field goals.

Super Bowl champions the New York Giants needed overtime to beat Cincinnati 26-23.

They sealed victory with John Carney's 22-yard field goal with just under nine minutes to play in the extra period. Shayne Graham's 21-yard field goal as regulation time expired had tied the scores for the visiting Bengals.

Unbeaten Buffalo won their third consecutive game when Rian Lindell kicked a 38-yard field goal as time expired for a 24-23 home victory over Oakland (1-2).

Titans QB Kerry Collins threw for 189 yards and a touchdown to become the 15th NFL quarterback to pass for 35,000 yards.

Tampa Bay (2-1) rallied to beat the Chicago Bears 27-24 thanks to Matt Bryant's 21-yard overtime field goal.

Atlanta handed Kansas City their 12th consecutive loss over two seasons, a 38-14 thrashing.

Michael Turner ran for three touchdowns and Roddy White teamed up with rookie quarterback Matt Ryan on a 70-yard TD pass play for the Falcons (2-1).
