Newquay surfer Alan Stokes has stormed into the second round of this year's Boardmasters in his hometown.
An impressive display in shoulder-high waves in the World Qualifying Series event earned him a place in the last-96 of England's richest surfing contest.
"I couldn't hear anything out there so I was just assuming I was last," he told BBC Radio Cornwall.
"When I came in my Dad had a massive grin on his face so then I knew I'd done alright."
Stokes finished ahead of Frenchman Thomas Bady, Bude's Joss Ash and Australian Michael Marjanovic.
Joining him in round two will be Jayce Robinson from St Ives, who pulled out all the stops to finish runner-up to South Devon-based Australian Matt Capel.
Australian Oli Adams, who lives in Newquay, is also through to the next round of the contest. There was disappointment for Newquay's Russell Winter and Mark Harris, both of whom were knocked out of the competition.
Winter was returning to top-class competition for the first time since breaking a wrist at Porthleven earlier this year.
"I'm really disappointed," said Winter after leaving the water.
"The waves just really changed when I was out there, I thought I was going to do better than that."
Winter, who a past winner of the Boardmasters, will now focus on the UK Pro Tour which continues next month.
