The owners of London Knights ice hockey club, the Anschutz Entertainment Group, have confirmed that their annual pre-season tournament will be held in the UK this year.

The competition, which will pit the Knights against sister clubs Munich Barons, Berlin Ice Bears, Geneva Eagles, Hammarby Stockholm and Sparta Prague, will take place at the London Arena in Docklands between 15-18 August.

The two previous tournaments for Anschutz's growing stable of European ice hockey clubs were held Berlin and Geneva.

" We want to come up with a competition that will help European teams keep the best players here in Europe "

The managing director of AEG Europe, Detlef Kornett, said: "This will be our best tournament for AEG ever in Europe with more teams and a format that will showcase some of the most talented players right here in London."

London Knights chief executive Joan Hill added: "We cannot think of a better way to introduce the start of the season than by facing world class teams in our home venue.

"Our crowds during the Ahearne Trophy matches this past season reflected a need for foreign clubs to add variety to the hockey played in the Superleague."

Lure of the NHL

Meanwhile, Belfast Giants boss Bob Zeller has joined a working party of the sport's governing body, the IIHF, looking at ways of raising the standard of European ice hockey.

The group will examine plans for the creation of a European league and discuss how to encourage talented players to stay in Europe rather than move to the wealthy National Hockey League.

"At the moment all the best players head to North America and the NHL," Zeller admitted.

"What we want to do is come up with a competition that will start to help European teams keep those guys here in Europe.

"To do that we need a viable league which needs a strong commercial presence and that's what we'll be working on."
