Situated in a suburb of Athens near to the coast, the Helliniko Olympic Complex will be the centre of activity for seven sports during the Games.

The venue, which will also host six Paralympic events, is on the site of the old Athens international airport eight kilometres south of the centre.

It was among the projects facing serious delays after complaints from local residents held up construction.

But test events have been held and all venues are due to be open by 12 August.

    Indoor Arena & Fencing Hall
An old airplane hangar has been converted into the venue for the basketball preliminaries and handball finals.

The arena should seat over 13,000 spectators, and will also host the wheelchair rugby tournament during the Paralympics.

    PARALYMPICS

  • Events: Archery (22-26 Sept)
    Football (18-28 Sept)
    Volleyball (19-22, 24-26 Sept)
    Wheelchair fencing (18-23 Sept)
    Wheelchair rugby (19-21, 23-25 Sept)

The Fencing Hall is split into two rooms for the preliminaries and finals, one with 3,500 seats and the other with 5,000 seats.

It will also be used for the Paralympic volleyball and wheelchair fencing tournaments.

    Baseball Centre
National teams from Greece, the Czech Republic, Russia and Sweden took part in a test event at the end of March.

The venue has two baseball fields, one of 8,500 seats and another of 4,000. It will also play host to archery during the Paralympics.

    Canoe/Kayak Slalom Centre
Another problematic venue that was moved from an area deemed to be of archaeological importance, it will accommodate 8,000 spectators.

    Hockey Centre
Belgium, Great Britain, Greece and Spain played in a test event in February, with the British coach complaining about the playing surface.

It was the first venue in the Helliniko complex to be completed and the main stadium has a capacity of 8,300 seats, with a smaller arena holding 2,000 seats.

The Hockey Centre will also be used for the Paralympics' two football events. The 5-a-side tournament will take place on Pitch 2, while the 7-a-side event will be on Pitch 1.

    Softball Stadium
Great Britain beat hosts Greece 3-0 in the stadium's inaugural game at the end of March. The main field has 3,500 seats and there are two warm-up fields.
