Gold for Henin-Hardenne

Belgium's Justine Henin-Hardenne recorded a straight sets win over Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo to win Olympic women's tennis singles gold.

The Belgian, who is recovering from a viral infection which kept her off the circuit for three months, won 6-3 6-3.

Despite a tiring semi-final against Anastasia Myskina on Friday, Henin-Hardenne looked sharp on court.

She gained breaks early in both sets and looked comfortable after that with some powerful ground strokes.

The Belgian controlled the match from the start and served well, never letting her opponent into the match, clinching victory with a powerful smash.

Mauresmo, who had beaten Henin-Hardenne in Florida just before the French Open, failed to get a break point in the match.

The gold is Belgium's first at these Olympics and is only their second tennis medal after doubles bronze for Dominique van Roost and Els Callens in Sydney.

"It's amazing. I am very proud," said a delighted Henin-Hardenne after the win.

"I don't know yet how to celebrate tonight but I surely will do.

"I feel physically so good and I just seem to get better each match I play."

Chile's Fernando Gonzalez emerged victorious in an epic battle against the USA's Taylor Dent to win men's singles bronze.

Gonzalez won 6-4 2-6 16-14 in a match which lasted just under three-and-a- half hours.

The Chilean had first served for the match in the 10th game of the decider.

Australian Alicia Molik defeated Anastasia Myskina 6-3 6-4 to win the women's singles bronze.

And Argentina's Paola Suarez and Patricia Tarabini of Argentina beat Japan's Shinobu Asagoe and Ai Sugiyama 6-3 6-3 to win the women's doubles bronze.
