Chinese women lead the way

Guo Yue and Niu Jianfeng eased into the quarter-finals of the women's doubles table tennis event to keep China's bid for a clean sweep of medals on track.

The number one seeds swept aside Taiwan pair Huang I-Hua and Lo Yun-Feng 4-0 - a feat quickly repeated by compatriots Wang Nan and Zhang Yining.

The Chinese second seeds completed the same scoreline to down Italy's Nikoleta Stefanova and Wenling Tan Monfardini.

China want to win all four women's and men's titles for the third time.

The country cleaned up in both previous Olympic Games in Sydney and Atlanta.

In the men's doubles, a host of European contenders are aiming to knock China off top spot.

"Of course the Chinese are very strong but I'm not sure they will do it this time," said Sweden's Jorgen Persson.

Persson and his partner Jan-Ove Waldner, seeded 13th, defeated Canada's Johnny Huang and Faazil Kassam in the second round to advance.

Dutch pair Trinko Keen and Danny Heister beat Australians William Henzell and David Zalcberg to earn a match against Chinese top seeds Chen Qi and Ma Lin.

China will begin their singles challenge on Tuesday - along with the rest of the top 16 seeds - after having byes in the first two rounds.

In the men's singles, China's hopes rest on a powerful trio of Wang Liqin, Ma Lin and Wang Hao, seeded one, two and four respectively.

Hong Kong's Leung Chu Yan beat North Korea's O Il in Monday's singles action.

While Croatia's Zoran Primorac dropped one set on his way to seeing off Bosnia Herzegovina's Srdjan Milicevic.
