British divers miss final

Great Britain's Tony Ally and Mark Shipman failed to reach the final of the men's Olympic 3m springboard diving on Tuesday.

Both finished outside the top 12 who qualified for showdown in the evening.

Ally finished 15th with 617.13 points, while Shipman came last of 18 divers with a disappointing 599.88.

Canadian teenager Alexandre Despatie led the way in the semi-finals with 772.32, ahead of China's Peng Bo and Russia's Alexander Dobroskok.

Ally and Shipman, fifth in synchronised diving last week, completed identical five-dive routines but were always going to struggle after just scraping through the qualifying round.

" We didn't do anything bad but that's not enough at the Olympics "

"It was always going to be difficult after the scores we carried through from the preliminary round," admitted Shipman.

"On the whole it's not been a total disaster, but it is disappointing that neither of us finished a few places higher.

"I think I'll take our performance in the synchro diving home as my Athens memory - that was a personal best for us."

Ally echoed the words of his Sheffield training partner, saying: "We didn't do anything special and we didn't do anything bad but that's not enough at the Olympics."
