Stevenson downed in opener

Sarah Stevenson rounded off a dismal display by Great Britain's taekwondo squad by losing her opening over-67kg bout at the Olympic Games on Sunday.

A marginal judging decision ended the 21-year-old's hopes following a 8-8 tie with Venezuela's Adriana Carmona.

Both fighters picked points off each other in an edgy fight before the referee signalled Carmona the winner.

Carmona lost out to Zhong Chen in the quarter-finals ending Stevenson's hopes of earning a bronze via the repechage.

The Doncaster fighter had come to Athens in top form and, after a tentative start, she went 3-2 up with a series of spinning kicks.

Carmona responded, delivering a series of counter kicks to leave little to choose between the two fighters.

And with the scores locked, Carmona's aggressive play paid off as she was given the contest.

Great Britain had been handed the maximum four qualifying spots in Athens but the chosen quartet have failed to live up to expectations.

Only Paul Green reached the quarter-final stages with Craig Brown and Sarah Bainbridge defeated at the first stage.
