Bainbridge and Brown beaten

Sarah Bainbridge and Craig Brown failed to lift the spirits of Great Britain's taekwondo squad as they both missed out on a spot in the quarter-finals.

Bainbridge produced an aggressive final round against Charmie Sobers but the Dutch fighter responded to seal a 7-6 win in the under-67kg class.

Brown was then defeated 12-6 by dangerous Australian Daniel Trenton in the under-80kg class.

Saturday's dual defeats follow Paul Green's under-56kg quarter-final loss.

Brown was unlucky to face the Sydney Games silver medallist in his first bout.

The 21-year-old matched Trenton in the opening exchanges before the Australian moved ahead 5-2 at the end of the first round.

Trenton then asserted his dominance with a powerful front kick that left Brown reeling on the mat.

"I just think I ran out of steam," said Brown, who is competing at his first Olympics.

"I gave my best and it's good for me to feel that I could go out there though and I didn't let the occasion get to me."

Bainbridge, the five-time British champion, had clawed her way back from 5-2 down with a succession of point-scoring hits.

But Sobers let down her defensive position and responded with some quickfire kicks to advance.

British hopes now lie with Sarah Stevenson, who narrowly missed out on bronze in Sydney, who contests the over-67kg on Sunday.
