Germany end GB hopes

Great Britain's hopes of picking up a medal in the men's hockey ended after a 4-1 defeat to Germany on Saturday.

Two goals from Christopher Zeller and one apiece for Matthias Witthaus and Justus Scharowsky handed the world champions a well-deserved victory.

Zeller could have had a hat-trick, but his penalty stroke in the 20th minute was smartly saved by the feet of goalkeeper Simon Mason.

Graham Moodie scored a late consolation goal for Britain in the 60th minute.

Jason Lee's side were hoping to draw inspiration from Great Britain's gold medal-winning hockey team from Seoul, who beat Germany in the final in 1988.

But there was no repeat of that historic day as the Germans dominated from the first whistle in Athens.

Zeller opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when he took advantage of some weak defending to slide his shot past Mason.

The second-half began badly for Britain when Niall Stott was sin-binned for a shoulder charge on Germany's captain Florian Kunz.

Witthaus doubled Germany's lead two minutes later with a fine reverse-stick shot and seconds later Zeller took the game beyond Britain's reach, making it 3-0.

Scharowsky slammed in the fourth before Moodie's late strike.
