Ulmer storms to gold

New Zealand's Sarah Ulmer stormed to gold in the women's individual pursuit in a new world record time.

Ulmer, fourth in Sydney four years ago, beat Australia's Katie Mactier in a time of three minutes 24.537 seconds.

Mactier led for the first kilometre but could not maintain her pace and finished four seconds back in 3:37.650.

Holland's Leontien Zijlaard-van Moorsel, a three-time gold medallist in Sydney, took the bronze, beating Australia's Katherine Bates.

It was the Dutch star's last Olympic race, retiring as the most successful cyclist in history with four gold, one silver and a bronze.

Mactier had earlier taken the world record off Ulmer in qualifying, but the New Zealander lowered it by another two seconds with her winning effort.

Britain's Emma Davies finished ranked eighth after losing to Mactier.
