Germany clinch sprint title

Germany in action at the Athens velodrome Germany set yet another Olympic cycling record on their way to gold in the men's team sprint on Saturday.

The trio of Jens Fiedler, Stefan Nimke and Rene Wolff clocked 43.980 seconds to beat surprise finalists Japan.

Germany had earlier beaten Great Britain trio Jason Queally, Jamie Staff and Olympic one kilometre time trial champion Chris Hoy in the first round. Defending champions France took bronze when they beat Australia in the third-place race-off.

In the women's 3000m individual pursuit, Britain's Emma Davies was comfortably beaten by Australia's Katie Mactier.

Davies, who set a lifetime best of 3:35.069 secs in qualifying, was over 10 seconds behind her opponent's impressive time of 3:28.095 secs.

Mactier will now take on New Zealand's Sarah Ulmer in the final on Sunday.

Ulmer set yet another world and Olympic record when she smashed her own previous mark by nearly three-and-a-half seconds.

Four-time gold medallist Leontien Zijlaard-Van Moorsel will go for bronze in the third-place race off.
