China's Xiang Liu equalled Colin Jackson's world record of 12.91 seconds to win the Olympic men's 110m hurdles.
Xiang led from the front and won with ease, with American Terrence Trammell taking the silver and Cuba's Anier Garcia clinching the bronze.
Tramell recorded a time of 13.18, with Garcia close behind in 13.20.
France's Ladji Doucoure, who qualified for the final with the fastest time, made a nightmare start from the blocks and finished last in 13.76.
Xiang was in shock following his stunning victory.
"I never dreamed I could break the world record," he said.
"I have never run under 13 seconds, even in training."
His coach Sun Haiping said: "Liu Xiang showed his best and overcame his poor start. Liu has always been fast in the latter part of the race and but not so good at starting.
"But tonight he showed his advantage and overcame his weakness."
Jackson, who was watching the race while working as a commentator for the BBC, was surprised with Xiang's effort.
"We always talked about him possibly doing that, but I thought it would need Allen Johnson in the race for the world record," said the former 110m hurdles world champion.
"He got out really fast and I was really impressed with the way he took the race on.
"It was a phenomenal performance here at the Olympic Games. I am chuffed. Good job."
Xiang becomes the first Chinese male to win an Olympic track athletics gold.
