Britain's best regatta

Men's eight
Olympic rower and BBC Five Live commentator Richard Phelps reviews the British rowing results in Sydney.

I owe the British men's eight an apology. I said they would have the row of their lives in the final and walk away with silver.

I'm happy to stand corrected and applaud Britain's first gold medal eight for 88 years.

The manner of their victory deserves so much respect.

Their sheer audacity and raw aggression had them nearly a length in front by halfway.

It made the Olympic final look like an opening heat of seniors eights at Talkin Tarn regatta (no disrespect to Talkin Tarn) was the marque of true Olympic champions.

Congratulations must go to James Cracknell and Tim Foster, who brilliantly converted the happy couple of Pinsent and Redgrave into a larger 'family-sized' unit

Many words have been written about Redgrave and his fifth gold medal and I can't see the need to add any more here.

Congratulations must go to James Cracknell and Tim Foster who brilliantly converted the happy couple of Pinsent and Redgrave into a larger 'family sized' unit.

It can't have been easy being the new boys in the crew and the win was as much about their first gold medal as it was about Redgrave's fifth.

With Mathew Wells in the single scull performing beyond expectations, and the lightweight double struggling to get back on form following an accident, the only disappointment in the men's team was the pair of Ed Coode and Greg Searle.

But fourth is only disappointing because of the high expectations they set for themselves.

We mustn't forget that, following an indifferent season, they arrived at Sydney with no tangible hopes of gold and yet by the time the final started we all believed they could win.

Missing out on a medal by a margin of four tenths of a second is too cruel for words, but is probably the highest price payable for never being a pair in perfect unison.

Regrave enjoyed great support

The silver medal won by the women's quad scull is, in many ways, as historic as Redgrave's fifth.

Being the first British women's Olympic rowing medal makes Sydney a defining moment for the sport in Great Britain.

Long overdue and much deserved, the four scullers (and their coach) surpassed themselves.

After their semi-final, they began to talk about catching the Russians, but they knew it would be hard and close.

None of us were prepared for quite how hard and how close, but why waste energy winning silver by a second when one hundredth of a second will do?

Celebrations

Whilst we all joined the celebrations of the quad we must not forget the disappointment of the rest of the women's team, particularly the coxless pair who finished a disastrous ninth which does not reflect their individual ability.

They and the double scull (who also finished ninth) will leave Sydney wondering what went wrong.

The women's eight, who excelled themselves by qualifying did not do themselves justice by finishing seventh, but all of them will look back to this time last year and be proud of what they achieved.

Two golds and a silver is probably what the team manager secretly thought possible.

Whether he predicted who would actually win them or in the style that they were won is another matter, but it was undoubtedly Britain's best Olympic regatta.
