Simon Jackson's hopes of capturing his fourth Olympic gold medal ended after he was narrowly beaten in the semi-finals of the 81kg Judo competition.

The Littleborough-based fighter lost his first bout after 162 unbeaten fights, a run which has stretched over 12 years, when he was beaten by Isao Rafael Cruz Alonso.

The Cuban won by virtue of a Yuko secured in the early stages of the bout which turned out to be the only score of the entire fight.

But Jackson acknowledged he was second best in the fight. He said: "I do not want to take anything away from him, he beat me fair and square.

"I couldn't break him down. I'm just so disappointed I feel as though I've let everybody down."

However, Jackson was able to add to his Olympic medal collection when he beat Hungarian Vincze Gabor inside 42 seconds with Ippon in the bronze medal play-off.
