Sharapova to miss US Open & Games

Maria Sharapova receives treatment

Women's world number three Maria Sharapova will miss both the US Open and the Olympic Games after tearing two small tendons in her right shoulder.

The injury forced the 21-year-old Russian to withdraw from this week's WTA Rogers Open in Montreal.

"The doctor does not believe that I need surgery and feels that I should be ready to play in two to three months," said Sharapova.

"It hurts me so much to miss the Olympics and the US Open."

Sharapova was in pain in her second-round 7-5 5-7 6-2 win over Poland's Marta Domachowska and an MRI scan revealed a torn rotator cuff in her shoulder.

The Australian Open champion has only played three matches since losing to Dinara Safina in the fourth round of the French Open.

"You can imagine that I was not very thrilled to hear that my medical team did not see this tear in my shoulder back in April"

Sharapova first re-injured her shoulder at Indian Wells in March when stretching for a backhand against Alona Bondarenko.

"(Dr David) Altchek looked at all my tests from April and today informed me that I have been playing with a moderate tear in my rotator cuff tendon since April," said the three-time Grand Slam winner.

"He actually couldn't believe that I've been playing this long with this injury.

"You can imagine that I was not very thrilled to hear that my medical team did not see this tear in my shoulder back in April.

"The good news is that it didn't get much worse since April, but we could have started the healing time back then instead of now.

"The timing is so unfortunate and this makes me more sad than anything."

Sharapova has been replaced in Beijing, where the women's singles begin on 10 August, by Vera Zvonareva, while the US Open starts on 25 August in New York.
