GB seal Beijing taekwondo places

Aaron Cook

Britain will send three taekwondo fighters to the Beijing Olympics after booking two more places at the European qualifying tournament in Turkey.

Mansfield-based Tyrone Robinson and Dorchester's Aaron Cook won silver and bronze respectively in their events.

Louise Mair, from Elgin, missed out on qualification by one point as she was beaten in her bronze medal match.

Sarah Stevenson had already qualified a place for GB at the world qualifying event in Manchester last September.

"It's a great result," said Great Britain performance director Gary Hall.

"It's the first time we've qualified a place though the world event, and one in silver medal position at the European Event.

How will GB's taekwondo trio fare in Beijing?

"It shows our athletes, new academy and coaching staff are working well towards 2012."

The competitors in Istanbul had to finish in the top three in their weight category to qualify for Beijing.

Robinson justified his selection by reaching the final in the men's -58kg category, where he was beaten by Portugal's Pedro Miguel Moreira Povoa.

Cook, who had narrowly missed out on a Beijing place at the Manchester qualifying event, was recently named GB taekwondo's British Olympic Association athlete of the year.

And the 16-year-old from Dorchester confirmed his potential by claiming bronze in the -80kg category.

Cook will have to maintain his form in the run-up to the Beijing Games in August, however, as his GB team-mate Craig Brown will be challenging him for the right to take up the place.

Mair won through to the last four in the women's -49kg category, but her hopes were dashed when she was edged out by Germany's Sumeyye Gulec.
