Sullivan and Bernard trade record

Eamon Sullivan of Australia took back his 100m freestyle world record moments after Frenchman Alain Bernard had broken it in Beijing.

Bernard set a new best of 47.20 seconds in the first semi-final on Wednesday, before Sullivan hit back with 47.05 in the second semi.

The pair will battle it out for the gold medal in the final on Thursday.

In the women's 200m butterfly, British pair Jemma Lowe and Ellen Gandy failed to qualify for the final.

Lowe finished third in the first semi-final in 2:07.87, missing out on qualification by just 0.14s.

In the second semi-final, Gandy finished eighth in a time of 2:10.60.

Fellow Briton Kristopher Gilchrist missed out on a place in the 200m breastroke final after finishing 13th fastest of the semi-finalists in 2:10.27.
