European Swimming Ch'ships day three

Milorad Cavic stages his own political protest Who's a naughty boy then? Milorad Cavic staged his own political protest after winning the 50 metres butterfly in a new European record.

Dressed initially in the Serbian flag - the American-based swimmer decided to unveil a T-shirt brandished with 'Kosovo is Serbia' written in his native language.

It wasn't picked up at the time in the pool, but a complaint was received by the organisers who informed the European Governing body (LEN).

Cavic was fined 7,000 euros following a disciplinary committee meeting and suspended from further individual events, ruling him out of the 100 butterfly later in the week.

When British Swimming feel the time is right to look for a new head coach to replace Ian Turner, Jacco Verhaeren may be the man they turn to.

The man who has masterminded the resurgence in Dutch swimming is highly thought of in Britain and a well connected journalist here in Eindhoven believe it's a job Jacco would relish.

Jos van Kuijeren, from Dutch broadcaster (Nos), says he believes that Verhaeren is looking for a new challenge after Beijing and would be a very good coach for the British team but doesn't know if he can adapt to the British culture.

Kirsty Balfour and David Davies have arrived for their events. Kirsty, the defending European Champion in the 200 metres breaststroke has come on in leaps and bounds under coach Fred Vernoux in Edinburgh.

The Frenchman has taken Kirsty from a top 16 swimmer in 2004 to silver medallist in last year's World Championships.

The event is moving on at a rapid rate and Kirsty will need to improve upon her best of 2 minutes 24 secs to get a medal in Beijing, though she will hopefully be too good for the field here.

David Davies has a much tougher task ahead of him.

The gold and silver medallists from last year's 1500 metres freestyle in Melbourne are both here.

Mateusz Sawrymowicz took David's European record, and Yuri Prilukov has already shown, with his consummate performance to win the 400 metres freestyle here, that he is in tip-top shape.

Another European record is on the cards, and Davies will be keen to shake off the bronze medal tag that he hates so much. Aside from the Commonwealth Games, he's been third in the last three big international events he's competed in.

I'm hoping to see the Welshman break that hex in Saturday's final and put in an impressive display in the heats.

And finally... they are hot on accreditations here - even if you are allowed to go into certain areas you are sometime viewed with suspicion, or is that just me?

But does the mascot really need to prove who he, or possibly she, is?

In Eindhoven they do apparently - could this possibly be the Dutch equivalent of 'Your name's not on the list, so you're not coming in'?
