Fallon handed Olympic squad place

Craig Fallon

Former world champion Craig Fallon has beaten James Millar to a place in Great Britain's 2008 Olympic judo team.

Fallon, who won world gold in 2005, was chosen after both men met qualifying criteria in the under-60kg category.

Peter Cousins, who a ban for missing three drugs tests overturned by the British Olympic Association in 2006, is also in the team.

Euan Burton, Karina Bryant, Winston Gordon, Michelle Rogers and Sarah Clark complete the seven.

Fallon, Bryant, Gordon and Clark all competed at the 2004 Athens Olympics, when Great Britain failed to win any judo medals.

Hopes are high for Beijing, despite the team's failure to win a medal at the recent European Championships in Portugal, which marked the end of the Beijing qualifying process.

Mancunian Rogers, 31, competed in Atlanta in 1996 but poor form meant she missed out on Sydney and Athens.

"We will be judged on what happens on the mat in Beijing in August"
GB team member Euan Burton

"It's 12 years since I last competed, but I'm much better prepared this time," said the 2002 Commonwealth champion, who topped the European qualification rankings for her weight division.

"In Atlanta, I was devastated to go out after losing two fights.

"But I was up against the Chinese girl who won gold and another girl who finished with the bronze medal and I lost to both of them by small scores."

Fallon, from Wolverhampton, is set to fight on the opening day of competition at the Games on 9 August.

The 25-year-old is determined to make up for the disappointment of Athens four years ago, when he suffered a controversial first-round exit.

"I felt like I was fighting well enough to take a medal in Athens, but I had a lapse in concentration just four seconds from the end and I got thrown," said Fallon.

"Since then, I have been in the same situation and I have had it in the back of my mind not to do the same thing as in Athens.

"I have taken a lot from that, and going into Beijing, I now have a lot more experience."
