Hawes to lead GB men in Beijing

Ben Hawes

Ben Hawes has been named as captain of the Great Britain men's hockey team at this summer's Beijing Olympics.

Hawes played in Athens four years ago as did Rob Moore and Barry Middleton, who are named as vice-captains by head coach Jason Lee.

The squad have two warm-up games in Belgium on 17 and 18 July before heading off to a Macau training camp.

The squad for those matches games will be the 16 members of the Olympic squad plus goalkeeper James Fair.

The Olympic squad is the same group of players who beat India at the qualifying tournament in March to secure a place in Beijing.

"This group have repeatedly shown that they are able to cope with new and challenging environments, so I have no fear that they may wilt under the Olympic spotlight," said coach Lee.

The women's squad also contains three Olympic veterans, although Mel Clewlow, Lucilla Wright and Kate Walsh's previous experience was at Sydney, as the team did not qualify for the Athens games.

Charlotte Craddock, 17, will become the youngest player to represent Team GB at an Olympic hockey tournament.

Sarah Thomas, who plays for Rotterdam in the Netherlands, has also been selected with the Merthyr-born product becoming the first Welsh female outfield player to represent Great Britain at the Olympics.

"I'm still in shock about being selected, especially considering I suffered a setback in February with a stress fracture in my back," said Craddock, who plays club hockey for Cannock.

Women's coach Danny Kerry said the squad had a good mix of youth and experience.

"The squad has a good nucleus of experienced players, some of whom have already tasted Olympic competition in 2000," he said.

"Equally the squad contains an element of youth, which has shown its effectiveness against top-ranked international teams."
