Garrard and Grant quit GB hockey

Brett Garrard

British pair Brett Garrard and Helen Grant have announced their international retirements.

Surbiton defender Garrard, 31, is England's most capped player with 193 appearances and has featured in two Olympics and three World Cups.

"Brett should be considered one of the most significant players of his generation," said GB coach Jason Lee.

Canterbury forward Grant, 28, has been forced to quit because of a serious knee injury.

She ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament and tore the meniscus in her right knee in 1997.

That caused damage to her tibia and femur which brought on early arthritis.

"I am still very competitive and can hobble around at national league level," said Grant.

"But the only thing I can guarantee on the international stage is that I will give 100% - I cannot guarantee that I will not break down.

"Trying to compete for an Olympic place when my knee is as sore as it is unfortunately just isn't realistic any more."

Lee left Garrard out of his 18-man squad for the Olympic qualifiers earlier this year, at which Britain sealed a Beijing berth.

But the GB coach said: "Brett has been one of the most admirable servants to Great Britain and England hockey."

Garrard made his England debut on 16 March 1997 against Pakistan and made his final international appearance more than 10 years later in GB's 6-0 win over Poland in February.
