Double bronze for debutant Cook

Britain's Tina Cook celebrated her Olympic debut by winning double bronze at the equestrian in Hong Kong.

The 37-year-old won individual eventing bronze after Britain had finished third in the team event earlier in the day.

Germany were celebrating winning a double gold after Hinrich Romeike won the individual event following on from their team success earlier in the day.

Gina Miles of the United States claimed individual silver, with Australia second in the team standings.

Afterwards, an emotional Cook said: "I can't speak. It is unbelievable, like a dream come true."

Cook was lying in joint sixth heading into the final show-jumping stage on Miners Frolic, but a clear round saw her briefly occupy first place.

She faced an anxious wait as she watched six riders follow her around the jumps, but saw four of them dislodge fences which elevated her to third.

In the team event Britain started the day 11.70 points behind second-placed Australia but never really challenged for silver despite a clear round for Cook.

After the showjumping phase, Germany had amassed 166.10 penalty points, with Australia on 171.20 and Britain 185.70.

Cook was the lead performer for Britain, clearing all the fences to help ensure the team took third place.

It was all the more impressive considering Cook's horse Miners Frolic is, at just 10 years old, the youngest in the British team.

"I'm so excited," she said. "The way he has jumped feels great. The horse is really young and I'm really pleased with him as he has never seen anything like this before."

Britain's other scorers were William Fox-Pitt, who picked up just four penalty points on Parkmore Ed for a final tally of 64.20 while veteran Mary King, on Call Again Cavalier, scored eight penalty points to finish on 64.10.

Ireland's team of Patricia Ryan, Niall Griffin, Geoffrey Curran, Louise Lyons and Austin O'Connor finished eighth with 276.10 points.

The USA's Phillip Dutton was disqualified for breaching a new rule limiting the weight of a horse's boots to 500 grams.

Some riders use weighted boots on their horse's back legs in the show-jumping phase to make them pick their feet up, but they have to be within a certain weight limit.

Dutton would have finished 12th in the individual competition, although his disqualification does not affect the USA's final team position of seventh.
