Daisy Dick aims for Olympic glory

Daisy Dick

Daisy Dick says she hopes she and her horse, Spring Along, can bring Olympic glory back to Berkshire.

Dick was called into the Great Britain three-day event team for the Beijing Olympics last week.

She told BBC Radio Berkshire she and Spring Along had been together "longer than a lot of marriages".

She said: "We know each other inside out which can be a bit of a nuisance - he knows all of my weak spots and I know his but we're a good little team."

Dick said she always hoped she would make it to Beijing even after missing out on initial selection.

"It's always been the case that at least one person has dropped out during the season and they've brought reserves in to take their places," she said.

"In Hong Kong, you want a horse who's consistent, brave and experienced"

"So I always kept my fingers crossed, even though that was a bit mean as they're all my friends and I don't really want any of them to miss out, but you have to grab the opportunities when you can.

"We have a very good team this time - we may have lost two riders, but I don't think the team's any weaker with the two riders we've brought on.

"We're going to give it everything and we want to come back with lots and lots of medals."

Dick added that the three-day eventers were as committed to hard training as many other sportsmen and women heading to Beijing.

"I'll probably start at about eight in the morning on a normal day and I'll be finished by about four o'clock. So we train for many hours of every day.

"Each horse will have probably an hour's work - it may be more - sometimes two spots of work in the morning and in the afternoon. So they have to be extremely fit and we have to be too.

"The conditions in Hong Kong, where we're having the equestrian events of the Olympics, are going to be so hot and humid that our fitness is going to be paramount."

Spring Along will be 15 years old at the Olympic Games, but Dick said that age was not a factor.

"If he stays fit and healthy, he should have quite a few more years left in the sport.

"He has a lot of experience and I think with the tough conditions we're going to have in Hong Kong, you want a horse who's consistent, brave and experienced."
