Pendleton wants equality in 2012

Victoria Pendleton

Victoria Pendleton has urged the organisers of London 2012 to introduce more cycling events for women.

Pendleton, 27, won gold in Beijing in the women's sprint event, but could have gone for more medals if the women's schedule matched the men's.

The men had four more events, including the keirin and team sprint, events Pendleton would have been fancied in.

"I had one chance to win a medal. I would have loved there to have been two or three," she told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Pendleton, who won two golds and a silver at the 2007 Track Cycling World Championships in Manchester, added: "I would have been confident of picking at least another medal.

"There should be a women's version of the keirin in 2012. There isn't a reason why we shouldn't have the same events.

"There has been a rumour that there will be another event for women in 2012 and I'm just keeping my fingers crossed it will be the team sprint so I could have another chance of winning a medal."

Pendleton added that the eight golds won by the cycling team in London could be matched in London.

"It will be tough but there's a couple of areas where we can improve on and if there will be additional events for the women that would be great," she said.

"We have improved massively as a team. We have dominated the world for a while now and we are just going to keep pushing on for 2012."
