Hoy misses out in athletes' vote

British cycling hero Chris Hoy has lost out on being elected to the International Olympic Committee's Athletes Commission.

Hoy, 32, whose three golds in Beijing were unprecedented for a Brit, was the only candidate put forward by Team GB.

All competitors at the 2008 games were entitled to vote for athletes to fill the four places on the commission.

Moon Dae-Sung, Alexander Popov, Claudia Bokel and Ruiz-Luaces Yumilka were elected by their peers on Thursday.

A total of 7,830 athletes - 71.6% of all eligible voters - chose from among 29 candidates from as many countries, with the voting to be cast for four different athletes from four different sports.

South Korea's Dae-Sung was a taekwondo gold medallist at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Russian swimming legend Alexander Popov won four Olympic golds in the sprint freestyle at the Atlanta and Barcelona games while Claudia Bokel picked up silver for Germany four years ago in the épée fencing.

Ruiz-Luaces Ymilka, who was part of Cuba's bronze-medal-winning indoor volleyball team in Athens, was the fourth member elected.

They will serve as IOC members for a term of eight years, representing fellow athletes in the Olympic Movement.

Hoy became the first Briton in 100 years to win three golds at the same Olympics after success in the team sprint, keirin and individual sprint.

The Edinburgh-born athlete also claimed the 1km individual sprint title at the 2004 Athens games.
