British pair reach K1 500m finals

Tim Brabants and Lucy Wainwright

British canoeist Tim Brabants secured his place in a second Olympic final by snatching third place in semi-final two of the men's K1 500m.

The 31-year-old, already qualified for the K1 1000m final, came through strongly in one minute 42.530 seconds.

In the women's K1 500m, Britain's Lucy Wainwright also qualified for the final, finishing second in semi-final one in a time of 1:52.580secs.

Wainwright, 30, made a slow start but was impressive in the closing stages.

Both finals take place on Saturday, with the men going at 0830 BST and the women at 0920 BST.

But Brabants must first race in the K1 1000m final on Friday at 0730 BST.

"It's a totally different race, 500m to 1000m," he said. "Historically the 1000m is my preferred event, so I am looking to do well in that one."

Brabants came in behind winner Steven Ferguson of New Zealand, and Anders Gustafsson of Sweden in the 500m semi-final.

"This has been a very successful bit of water for us over the last two weeks. It's time for me to do my part," he added.

Wainwright, who came seventh in the K1 500m final in Athens four years ago, trailed Inna Osypenko-Radomska of the Ukraine and crossed the line ahead of South Africa's Jennifer Hodson in her semi.

"I didn't get a good start again, but then I just kept flooring it all the way to the line," she said Wainwright.

"It's really quite tough out there. I guess I came here to make the finals but there's so many great girls out there.

"I put pressure on myself because I made the finals in Athens, but if I can nail my start then who knows where I could finish?"
