Jeffries powers to boxing medal

British boxing light-heavyweight Tony Jeffries secured at least a bronze medal after confidently dispatching Hungary's Imre Szello 10-2.

Jeffries went into the second round 2-1 up after a cagey opening but pulled away with four unanswered points in the second, dominating with his stiff jab.

In the fourth round, Jeffries forced Szello to take a standing count after breaking through with some solid shots.

The 23-year-old will now face Ireland's Kenny Egan in Friday's semi-finals.

Jeffries received a bye into the second round and only scraped into the last eight with a victory against Eleider Alvarez on the countback system.

But he looked in far better shape against the one-dimensional Szello, scoring with a string of right hands.

Jeffries was in cruise control and continued to dominate the fight in the final round, punching his way to Britain's second boxing medal of the Games in the process.

He said: "I've had my ups and down like most boxers. But this is a dream come true. To get here was brilliant, now getting a medal is the proudest moment of my life.

"It's everything I've trained for over the last two years. I've dedicated so much of my life to getting a medal. All those cold morning runs have paid off now."

Super-heavyweight David Price ensured he would do no worse than a bronze when he beat Jaroslav Jaksto on Monday.
