Bryant leads US to semi-finals

Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant scored 25 points to help United States to a 116-85 win over Australia and a place in the Olympic men's basketball semi-finals.

The Americans moved up the gears in the second quarter, having led by just a single point after the opener.

They now face Argentina who recorded a narrow 80-78 win over Greece, while Lithuania also booked a last-four spot with a 94-68 win over China.

The Lithuanians will play Spain, who overcame Croatia 72-59.

Following his side's match, US point guard Chris Paul said they were unconcerned by failing to find top gear in the opening quarter.

Are Team USA a foregone conclusion as gold medallists?

"Early in the game, they made a lot of tough shots," he said.

"We were doing what we were supposed to be doing and they made tough shots, but sooner or later we'll impose our will. I don't know if you can keep up with us for 40 minutes."

Australia coach Brian Goorjian agreed, adding: "I think they're going to be very, very, very tough to beat."

Meanwhile, China basketball superstar Yao Ming said he was pleased with how far his country had progressed in the competition.

"I'm really happy, but also a little sad about our result," said the Houston Rockets centre, who scored 19 points in the game.

"We were determined to fight, but were limited by our capabilities."
