Radcliffe confirms marathon run

Paula Radcliffe has told the BBC she will definitely be running in Sunday's Olympic marathon in Beijing.

Radcliffe's build-up to the race has been hit by injury, including a stress fracture in her leg.

She arrived in Beijing on Thursday after spending time at the Great Britain team's training camp in Macau.

"I'm really glad to have got to this point and now that I have got here I really want to go out there and run as well as I can," she said.

"My leg has been fine and has handled the biggest amount of running I have done on it so far in Macau and things are good."

The 34-year-old world record holder is still chasing an Olympic medal after being forced to drop out of the 2004 marathon in Athens with dehydration. She also failed to finish the 10,000m a few days later.

Radcliffe had been rated a doubtful starter for Beijing when she was diagnosed with the stress fracture in May but she remained confident of being able to compete.

"This year has been really tough. I've always believed I would be here but sometimes there have been times that I wondered whether it would happen," she said.

"But when I could do the sessions I wanted out in Macau, the belief was getting stronger.

"I know it is going to hurt more than any other marathon because I am going in under-prepared. But I have a lot more fight and determination in me because of what I have been through to get to this point.

"If you aren't on the start line you have no chance of winning a medal and for me it has been about being able to get to the start line healthy and able to give it a shot.

"I would like to have been able to do more training, but I haven't, but I have got here and that puts me in with a chance.

"The conditions will slow things down and hopefully it will mean a slower race.

"I have a lot of unfinished business with the Olympics. But I also think the Olympics are something more special anyway."

The marathon has already lost one big name with defending champion Mizuki Noguchi out with a thigh injury.
