O'Rourke sweats on Olympic place

Derval O'Rourke

Former world indoor champion Derval O'Rourke is the Irish athletics team's latest injury doubt for next month's Beijing Olympics.

The 100m hurdler missed Saturday's London Grand Prix meeting because of a groin injury.

She is scheduled to have an MRI scan over the next 24 hours.

Hammer thrower Eileen O'Keeffe, who is regarded as an outside bet for a medal, and 400m runner Joanne Cuddihy have both been hit by knee injuries.

Cuddihy's knee problem has ruled her out of action for several weeks and last year's World Championship semi-finalist appears to be a major doubt for the games.

O'Keeffe, sixth in last year's World Championships, was diagnosed with inflammation in a knee after producing an impressive series of 70m-plus throws in last weekend's Irish Championships.

Meanwhile, Paul Hession finished an impressive third in the high-class 200m at the London Grand Prix on Saturday.

Usain Bolt powered away to win in 19.76 ahead of Wallace Spearmon (20.27) but Hession demonstrated his status as one of Europe's best by clocking 20.37 - just .07secs outside his Irish record.

Those behind Hession included Zimbabwe's Brian Dzingai (20.44), Britain's Christian Malcolm (20.54) and American Rodney Martin (20.55).

David Gillick finished a solid third in the 400m in 45.35 behind his training partner Martyn Rooney (44.83) and Canada's Tyler Christopher (45.29).

Gillick finished ahead of quality Americans David Neville (45.39) and Darold Williamson (45.50).

Alistair Cragg also finished an encouraging third in the 3000m.

Cragg clocked 7:38.60 which left him behind Ugandan Boniface Kiprop (7:36.95) and Kenyan's Mike Kigen (7:37.66).

The Irish runner finished ahead of Ethiopia's Abebe Dinkesa and Britain's Mo Farah.
