Derham eyes final Olympic chance

Zoe Derham

Yate hammer thrower Zoe Derham will have one final chance to earn a place at the Olympic Games this week.

Derham won the trials in Birmingham, but only threw the B qualifying standard, and needs to reach the A standard in Loughborough on Thursday.

The 27-year-old is coached by former Commonwealth champion Lorraine Shaw.

"Previously all athletes had to throw it twice, but she's been told if she can do it once she'll be on the plane," Shaw told BBC Radio Gloucestershire.

"She's got to motivate herself and say 'right, this is my last chance', otherwise it's another four years."

The A standard is set at 69.50 metres, which means Derham will have to find another two metres on top of her winning throw in Birmingham.

"There were technical areas at the weekend, but I think she's capable of doing it.

"She's got to be there to give herself a chance.

"She's got to forget feeling sorry for herself and motivate herself and say 'right, this is my last chance', otherwise it's another four years."
