Desktop Monkey accessibility

Accessibility information:

The BBC Sport Desktop Monkey uses Adobe Air, which is dependent on users downloading and installing a dynamically updating, plug-in to their desktop.

While the BBC is committed to making its online services as accessible as possible, support for accessibility in Adobe Air has not allowed the BBC to make the BBC Sport Desktop Monkey completely accessible to all users, especially screenreader users.

As a result, screenreader users and those who decide to decline the plug-in will not be able to access the BBC Sport Desktop Monkey. They will, however, be able to access all of the BBC Sport Olympics coverage online at www.bbc.co.uk/sport.

The decision to use Adobe Air was taken to enable the BBC to pilot exciting new technologies and find ways to engage customers with innovative, branded desktop applications, without requiring changes to existing technology, people, or processes.

Using Adobe Air will help us measure the success of the application in providing value for our audiences, while giving us better understanding of the challenges of providing that value to all our audiences.

The BBC Usability & Accessibility team and Adobe are working together to significantly improve the accessibility of the application with a view to potentially releasing it across other BBC websites in the future.
