One of Australia's International Rules squad has been sent home from the Test series against Ireland after being involved in a nightclub incident.
Brendan Fevola allegedly assaulted a barman in Galway and the Australian Rules star was later interviewed by Gardai in connection with the incident.
It is understood the incident was captured on CCTV.
AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou said the player had offered "a full unconditional apology for his actions".
A statement on the AFL's official website added that Galway police had not decided whether they would take any further action in relation to the incident.
Mr Demetriou said he had immediately launched a full AFL investigation after being notified about the incident and had convened a meeting of the team's disciplinary.
The disciplinary commitee, which comprised of Mr Demetriou, AFL Football Operations Manager Adrian Anderson, AFLPA Chief Executive Brendan Gale, senior coach Kevin Sheedy and captain Dustin Fletcher, determined that Fevola was guilty of unacceptable behaviour.
"The AFL has co-operated fully with local authorities immediately we were informed of an incident involving one of our players earlier this morning, and we have also conducted our own internal disciplinary hearing," Mr Demetriou said.
"Brendan offered a full unconditional apology for his actions. The matter of whether Brendan may face any police charges down the track is a matter for the Galway police, but the AFL will not tolerate such behaviour from any player while representing our code and our competition.
"It was determined that Brendan would be suspended for Sunday's Second Test against Ireland at Croke Park, and immediately removed from the tour party and sent home. There will be no replacement player.
"The AFL has offered a full unconditional apology to the Galway police and the staff of the nightclub and, on behalf of the AFL, we are extremely embarrassed and disappointed that one of our players has been involved in an incident of this nature while representing the competition on an international stage."
Fevola was left out of the squad for Saturday's opening Test in Galway and the Carlton star was said to be very disappointed at missing the game as he has yet to represent his country in the compromise code.
