Rea to ride Superbike in Portugal

Jonathan Rea

Jonathan Rea will make his World Superbike debut in this weekend's final round of the championship in Portugal.

Ballyclare man Rea will be aboard a HannSpree Ten Kate Honda similar to that which he will ride for a full season in the series next year.

He currently lies second in the World Supersport series but will not race in that class this weekend.

Rea was named NGK Enkalon Irish Motorcyclist of the Year at the awards presentation in Antrim on Saturday.

The 21-year-old collected the award for the second year in succession after winning several races in the championship.

Rea lifted the Joey Dunlop Trophy after edging out runner-up Michael Dunlop with Ryan Farquhar third in the voting.

Speaking of his Superbike ride this weekend Rea said: "It's going to be quite different from riding the supersport bike and I'm really, really happy to get this chance.

"I'm sad however not to be able to finish the year with my supersport crew as they've been brilliant all season and I really wanted to win the title for them.

"If everything clicks and I can ride to my potential, there's no reason why I shouldn't be near the front.

"I know it's going to be hard though and the first session on Friday will be just getting comfortable on the bike.

"But I'll be aiming to do well in Superpole and looking to score points in both races."
