Loris Capirossi will miss the British MotoGP at Donington after suffering a serious gash to his hand and dislocated finger in the Catalunya MotoGP.
The Rizla Suzuki rider was injured when he crashed after being hit by Alex de Angelis on lap 11.
"I'm really disappointed not to be racing at Donington as it's the team's home race and I know a lot of fans will be there to see us," said the Italian.
His place will be taken by American Superbikes champion Ben Spies.
Capirossi, 35, is a former world champion in the 125cc and 250cc classes, and is the most experienced rider on the MotoGP grid.
Previously, he was with Ducati, moving to Suzuki at the end of last season to replace the departing John Hopkins.
Spies was already lined up to have a wildcard ride for Suzuki when the MotoGP championship goes to America, but has now had his debut brought forward.
"I was excited that my first GP was to be at Laguna Seca in the States, but I'm now more excited by this," he said.
"I think this will be a good thing for me to start out at Donington; it is a track I don't know so I have no pressure.
"I haven't done any testing on the bike or with race and qualifying tyres so I am not really expected to do anything much, so I can just go out there and learn how everything works and enjoy the event."
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Sete Gibernau is to test with his old team Ducati later this month.
The hugely experienced 35-year-old Spaniard was one of Valentino Rossi's main title challengers in the 2005 and 2006 seasons, before retiring at the end of that season when Ducati replaced him with Casey Stoner.
