Schumacher in the dock

Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher The decision to strip Michael Schumacher of pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix after his controversial stop at the Rascasse hairpin provoked plenty of reaction.

Stewards decided Schumacher had acted deliberately to hinder his rivals, and made him start from the back of the grid - but the seven-time world champion has maintained his innocence.

BBC Sport rounds up the best of the quotes.

Keke Rosberg, 1982 world champion:
"It was the cheapest, dirtiest thing I have ever seen in F1. He should leave F1 and go home.

"There was absolutely no way it could be an error. He parked the car to stop (Fernando) Alonso doing his fast lap."

Jenson Button, Honda driver:
"Anyone who knows anything about Formula One knows it was done on purpose. It was too obvious."

Michael Schumacher, Ferrari driver:

"I don't know what goes through your mind when you decide to do that, when you know that the rest of the world can see. It's stupid"
Jacques Villeneuve

"Whatever you do in certain moments, your enemies believe one thing and the people who support you believe another.

"Some people may not believe it, but unfortunately that's the world we live in."

Juan Pablo Montoya, McLaren driver:
"Was it really a mistake? I'm not so sure."

Flavio Briatore, Renault team boss:
"Someone who was seven times a world champion wants us to believe that he didn't do it on purpose - it's fairyland.

"Given that we are not Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, I think that what he did was unsporting."

Sir Jackie Stewart, three-time world champion:
"When I saw that, I said 'that wasn't an accident'.

"Why does it always have to happen? It's like Mike Tyson biting someone's ear off, isn't it?"
Mark Webber
Williams driver

"I have never seen anything like it before. I have never seen anyone have the presence of mind to do it.

"It might have been different if he had taken off the front wing.

"Alonso had pole position and I think that the Schumacher debacle was unfortunate and it should not have happened. I have to say I believe it was a deliberate manoeuvre."

Jacques Villeneuve, BMW Sauber driver and former world champion:
"You cannot win seven world championships and do that. It is unacceptable.

"It shows that every time in the past that he has done something like that - and people have given him the benefit of the doubt - that it was obvious.

"I hope it was deliberate, because if that was a mistake he should not even have an F1 super-licence.

"I don't know what goes through your mind when you decide to do that, when you know that the rest of the world can see. I don't understand it, it's stupid.

"He didn't need to do that, he's a seven times world champion, he was on pole position. Why do that? It's only going to make him look bad. This is embarrassing."

Willi Weber, Schumacher's manager:
"I think it's a scandal what has happened. In my opinion it was a driver's mistake in qualifying and I think this could happen to anybody... For me it's too hard and I cannot understand why the stewards found this decision.

"Michael is not amused. If you know Michael, he's not an emotional man. It takes a little while and he will speak and say something after the race.

"With no real evidence, the stewards have assumed he is guilty"
Jean Todt
Ferrari team boss

"We had something like this in the past already and we know the enemies and we know how they react against Michael. I think this time they went too far, it was too much.

"There was so much emotion and it was planned by our enemies in the paddock. They don't like him."

David Coulthard, Red Bull driver:
"It was no great surprise that Michael had to stop."

Jean Todt, Ferrari team boss:
"We totally disagree with it (Schumacher's punishment).

"Such a decision creates a very serious precedent, ruling out the possibility of driver error.

"Michael was on his final timed lap and was trying to put his first place beyond doubt, as could be seen from the fact that his first split time was the best.

"With no real evidence, the stewards have assumed he is guilty."

Mark Webber, Williams driver
"I just feel you don't have to do this stuff. Why does it always have to happen? It's like Mike Tyson biting someone's ear off, isn't it?"

Jarno Trulli, Toyota driver:
"You look at the TV pictures and you can clearly see he parked the car."
