Ganguly in rift with selectors

Zaheer Khan is deemed surplus to requirements

Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has complained that he was not consulted over team selection for the first Test against England.

Ganguly has questioned the wisdom of picking three untried seam bowlers, while dropping Ajit Agarkar, Ashish Nehra and Zaheer Khan.

The skipper said: "The selectors did not bother to ask me for my suggestions, nobody called me. Couldn't they call me for two minutes?

"Is it a new rule that the captain will not be asked for his opinion? I'll try to confirm this from the president Jagmohan Dalmiya", he told India's Mid-Day newspaper.

Tendulkar

"Now I understand why Sachin resigned," Ganguly said, referring to Tendulkar's refusal to lead India two seasons ago amidst reports of another rift with the selectors.

India have selected Sanjay Bangar, Iqbal Siddiqui and Tinu Yohannan as their specialist seamers in the squad of 14.

At the very least, one would play - sharing the new ball with Ganguly.

But since the track at Mohali is thought to be of more help to seamers, three spinners is unlikely to be the best option.

Bangar, 29, Siddiqui, 26, and Yohannan, 22, all impressed the selectors in the warm-up games against England.

But Ganguly has only ever seen one of them - Siddiqui - actually bowling.
