Coach Rudi Joubert's new tenure has been beset by problems, with a string of injuries weakening the squad and Cardiff losing their opening Celtic League match at home to unfancied Connacht on Saturday.
Canada flanker Dan Baugh will have surgery on both knees this week and will be out for at least six months.
Lions openside Martyn Williams is still recovering from the knocks he picked up in Australia, while No 8 Emyr Lewis could be out for six weeks with a bad back.
Hooker Jon Humphreys will also be missing for close to six weeks with a neck injury.
Craig Morgan's broken ankle will keep him on the sidelines until the end of October and fellow wing Nick Walne has undergone knee surgery and will not be available until the new year.
Coach Joubert says the injuries have come at a bad time for Cardiff.
"No-one can be blamed for the timing of most of the injuries, which came during the pre-season.
"That's why the youngsters have come in. Perhaps I wouldn't have chosen to throw 11 into the match against Connacht, but they will gain experience from it."
The South African admitted he was disappointed with the display against Connacht, saying: "Even though we only had four regulars in our side, we should not have lost that game.
"We made some bad mistakes, which we hope to put right in training this week."
Joubert's side were booed off, but he said: "I didn't really hear it, my mind was on other things. But the fans pay a lot of money and are entitled to their say."
