Alec Stewart and Marcus Trescothick put England in the driving seat when they both hit half-centuries on the second day of the third Test against the West Indies.
Stewart was marking his 100th Test match while Trescothick made a debut 50.
The duo took the fight to the West Indies after losing three early wickets at Old Trafford.
England had bowled the West Indies out for 157 but were rocked when they were reduced to 17-3, Courtney Walsh taking the wickets without losing a run.
But in stepped Stewart and Trescothick, who quickly steered England past the West Indies' total.
Stewart hit his 36th half-century of his England career off 63 balls, hitting seven fours.
Remarkably, it was England's first 50 of the series against the West Indies.
But Trescothick added the second soon after - albeit with a bit of luck.
On 48, the Somerset batsman skied a shot but it fell safely, in the middle of three fielders.
Walsh had made an early breakthrough for the tourists.
He had seen off Michael Atherton, then England captain Nasser Hussain and Graham Thorpe in consecutive balls.
Atherton, playing in his 100th Test, was out for just one run after a brilliant slip catch by Sherwin Campbell.
Deceived
And captain Hussain followed when he was caught in the gully by his West Indies counterpart Jimmy Adams for 10 runs.
In came Thorpe and he was totally deceived by a slower ball and was out plum leg before wicket for a first-ball duck to leave England stuttering on 17-3.
It meant Walsh on a hat-trick as Stewart headed to the crease.
But the wise professional he is, Stewart just prodded the ball down to the relief of the partisan crowd.
The tourists should have had Hussain earlier when Walsh caught him on the boundary.
Confident
But he stepped over the rope and a six was awarded to Hussain's relief.
Trescothick took 25 balls to get off the mark but there was a huge roar when he achieved his first run.
And he had made a solid half-century as England took a firm grip on the match.
Earlier it had been accurate and fast bowling from England that had ensured the tourists never got into a batting rhythm as six wickets fell on Friday.
Dominic Cork was the pick of the bowlers, claiming four wickets for just 23 runs.
