England made the most of a rain-limited opening day of the third Test by claiming four West Indies wickets.

It left the tourists struggling on 87-4 at the end of the first day's play.

The top four batsmen were all out before the 50 came up and the onus on rescuing the West Indies now rests with captain Jimmy Adams and Ramnaresh Sarwan, playing for the first time against England.

They managed a mini-fightback but will have to stay at the crease for a long period on Friday to give their team a good chance.

One more wicket would have been pleasing but I'm quite happy
Duncan Fletcher

The series is delicately poised with one win apiece but it will be England happier after the first day's play.

England coach Duncan Fletcher said afterwards: "I would give us seven or eight out of 10.

"One more wicket would have been pleasing but I'm quite happy. You get greedy in these situations."

The start was delayed until midday, with England able to capture the wickets of Sherwin Campbell and Adrian Griffith before lunch.

There was a three-hour rain break but when the teams returned to the pitch once more after tea, it was the West Indies who again struggled to gain runs.

Wavell Hinds and Brian Lara succumbed to the England bowlers, who used the conditions well to prevent the West Indies getting into any kind of rhythm.

England began the match magnificently with Sherwin Campbell and Adrian Griffith both falling in the opening few overs.

Cork: Lively as ever for England

Campbell was the first to be dismissed, thanks to a spectacular catch by Graham Thorpe in the slips with Darren Gough bowling at full pace.

Andrew Caddick was the next to strike with the score on 12, catching Griffith leg before wicket without playing a stroke.

Hinds was the third victim, Cork's first, but was rather unlucky.

He was given caught behind for 26 runs but television replays appeared to show the ball hit his pad and not his bat.

Fortunate

The West Indies were fortunate in the same over however when new batsmen Adams, looked to be plumb leg before wicket but was not given out to his relief.

But the West Indies problems continued in the next over when Gough bowled a clever ball to Lara, who edged it to Graham Thorpe at slip, to end his innings on 13.

England kept up the pressure, with the bowlers accurate and fast to cause the West Indies all kinds of problems.

England's Michael Atherton and Alec Stewart are both celebrating their 100th Test cap but they will have to wait before the get to bat.

Teams:

England Michael Atherton, Marcus Trescothick, Nasser Hussain (captain), Graham Thorpe, Michael Vaughan, Alec Stewart, Craig White, Andrew Caddick, Dominic Cork, Robert Croft, Darren Gough

West Indies - Sherwin Campbell, Adrian Griffith, Wavell Hinds, Brian Lara, Jimmy Adams (captain), Ramnaresh Sarwan, Ridley Jacobs, Courtney Walsh, Curtly Ambrose, Franklyn Rose, Reon King
