Lawrie demands Masters age limit

Casper hits Augusta worst

Paul Lawrie Former Open Champion Paul Lawrie says an age limit should be introduced at the Masters after Billy Casper carded a 34-over-par 106 on Thursday.

The 73-year-old's total was the worst round in Masters history by 11 shots.

"I'm certainly one of the ones who feel there should be an age restriction on it," Lawrie told BBC Radio Five Live.

"When you come to 60 I don't think you're competitive on a tour of that size. Mr Casper is 73 and there's no way he can compete at that age."

"Sixty is more than plenty - you've had your time, you've won your tournament and you've gone back a few times"
Paul Lawrie

Lawrie competed at the Masters in 2004 as the final year of the five-year invite he got following his Open win at Carnoustie.

But the Scot believes golfers over a certain age should not be included, even if they are former winners.

"It's obviously one of the rules that Augusta have where no matter your age you allowed to come back and play in the tournament," he added.

"My exemption at the Open is until I'm 65, which in my opinion is a little bit too long.

"Sixty is more than plenty, you've had your time, you've won your tournament and you've gone back a few times, your friends and family have seen you play."
