Matteson seals triumph in Arizona

Troy Matteson won his second PGA Tour title in a three-way play-off for the Frys.com Open after shrugging off a faltering finish to the final round.

The American bogeyed the last two holes for a closing two-under-par 68.

But he recovered to seal victory with a spectacular six-iron approach to two feet at the second extra hole.

The 29-year-old calmly knocked in the birdie putt to trump the pars recorded by Rickie Fowler and Jamie Lovemark at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale.

They had all finished the 72 regulation holes on 18 under at the Arizona course which had yielded birdies aplenty all week.

PGA Tour rookies Fowler and Lovemark had each signed off with a 64, Lovemark coming from four shots behind overnight with a sizzling run of five birdies in the last eight holes. All three then parred the first extra hole.

"It's unbelievable because you just don't think it's coming sometimes," a smiling Matteson said of his win in a greenside interview afterwards.

It was his first title since triumphing in the 2006 Las Vegas Open in his rookie season - and he did it the hard way after a two-over-par 72 on day one, followed by record-breaking consecutive rounds of 61.

Germany's Alex Cejka had a decent payday, with a closing 64 for a five-way tie for eighth while Scotsman Martin Laird followed his maiden PGA Tour victory last week in Las Vegas with a top-15 finish in his adopted hometown.

But England's Greg Owen, who had shared the lead with Fowler after 36 holes before a 73 ruined his chances on Saturday, bounced back on Sunday with a 68 to finish 10 under par for the week in a tie for 29th.
