Sandy Lyle has branded Europe's Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie a "drama queen" over the cheating row that has erupted between the two Scots.
In a recent interview, Lyle accused Montgomerie of "a form of cheating" at an event in Jakarta in 2005.
Lyle apologised on Tuesday but the pair have yet to speak, although Montgomerie has said he was "over" the issue.
"We sometimes call him a bit of a drama queen. He's probably milking it a bit," Lyle told BBC Radio 5 Live.
Montgomerie declined to talk to the media at the end of his opening round at the Open at Turnberry, but Lyle's comments have reignited the controversy.
Subsequently, Montgomerie's manager Guy Kinnings issued a statement on his client's behalf.
"Colin has nothing to add and wants to distance himself from any issues Sandy has," read the statement.
"He can't, nor will he, get involved in this sort of thing. He just wants to get on with his golf. People say there is bickering going on but bickering requires two people.
"Colin can't quite understand why he is being dragged into this."
The pair are both competing in the 138th Open Championship and 51-year-old Lyle says his attempts to speak to Montgomerie have so far failed.
HOW THE ROW HAS ESCALATED"He keeps disappearing," said Lyle. "I've tried to talk to him but I don't think he wants to talk to me right now.
"He's got to get around to it and stop hiding behind the manager and come out and we'll have a talk.
"It's annoying how it's worked out, but he should see that too.
"He's had many years' experience with the press and he should be a man about it, we'll get together and sort it out over a few pints at some stage."
Montgomerie beat Lyle to the position of Europe's Ryder Cup captain for the 2010 event at Celtic Manor and Lyle feels the row is likely to end any hopes he might have had of being named vice-captain.
"It puts my vice-captaincy for the Ryder Cup in jeopardy, very much so, and that's rather annoying in some ways but I just have to face the music," said Lyle, a former Open and Masters champion.
He added that his chances of being named in the role were, "about as (good) as me hitting a 500-yard drive right now I think".
On Wednesday, Montgomerie said that he was "over" the anger he felt after Lyle accused him of "a form of cheating" at the event in Indonesia, when he incorrectly replaced his ball after a weather delay.
He told the Daily Telegraph: "I was initially very cross, but I'm over it now and am certainly not going to hold any grudges."
Lyle had earlier apologised for his comments, before going on to repeat the allegation in a gesture Montgomerie described as "strange".
606: DEBATE"I didn't prefabricate a thing. I'm only going on what other people have said, and it was a pretty poor drop. It was one of his mistakes," he said.
"It will probably live with him for the rest of his life. It'll be cropping up. I can't do anything about that."
Lyle insisted the row with Montgomerie was not to blame for his round, which he started with double bogeys at the 2nd and 3rd, and ultimately resulted in a five-over 75.
Montgomerie, meanwhile, carded a one-over 71 in his first round at Turnberry.
