Sandy Lyle is keen to be captain of the European Ryder Cup team at Celtic Manor in 2010, but fears he faces competition from Welshman Ian Woosnam.
Lyle played in the Cup five times and would be a serious contender, with Jose Maria Olazabal and Colin Montgomerie having ruled themselves out.
"I can't see any reason why not me," said the 50-year-old Scot.
"As available captains go, there aren't an awful lot. I look the favourable choice. My only worry would be Woosie."

Lyle, the 1985 Open and 1988 US Masters champion, could face challenges for the captaincy from Faldo and Woosnam, who led the team to victory in 2006.
"A few of the committee are favouring me," added Lyle. "This is my last chance.
"I'm still fairly well in touch with the present players, your Lee Westwoods, and the Darren Clarkes.
"If I do get selected I'll probably be playing much more in Europe on the seniors (tour) to keep an eye on the European players."
A decision on the European captaincy is unlikely to be taken before the spring, although the European Tour's Tournament Committee will meet next week to discuss the matter.
If Lyle's campaign for the captaincy is ultimately successful, he already knows who he would like as his second-in-command.
"Somebody like Bernhard Langer I'd be very keen to have working with me," said Lyle.
"He's so methodical. He would provide a lot of feedback into decision-making."
Lyle is confident he would be well-suited to lead a side against American captain Corey Pavin.
"Corey and I have grown up together. He played the European Tour in the late 70s, early 80s and I've seen him on a regular basis in America.
"I know pretty much how he works. And I think I'll know pretty much how the American team might think as well."
