Hoey shoots superb 64 in Joburg

Michael Hoey

Michael Hoey made a blistering start at the Joburg Open with a seven-under-par 64 in Thursday's first round.

The Belfast player, who is one shot behind leaders Trevor Fisher and Steven Jeppesen, carded four birdies on the front nine.

Three more birdies followed before a bogey on the 17th, but he finished in style with a birdie at the final hole.

Clandeboye's Jonathan Caldwell and fellow Irishman Noel Fox opened with 72s while Michael McGeady posted a 71.
