Love wants to play in Ryder Cup

Davis Love

Davis Love insists he wants to play for, rather than captain, the United States in their Ryder Cup defence at Celtic Manor in 2010.

The 44-year-old says he was inspired by his country's victory at Valhalla last weekend and says he is determined to make a seventh Ryder Cup appearance.

"I was as nervous on Sunday and it didn't make me want to be the captain. It made me want to be play," he said.

"If I were offered the captaincy it would be great but I'm ready to play."

Davis has played in six Ryder Cups, winning nine, losing 12 and halving five of his 26 matches but he has failed to qualify for the event since 2004.

He has struggled for consistency since undergoing ankle surgery last year but Love says he has taken great heart from the form of older players such as 45-year-old Vijay Singh, 48-year-old Kenny Perry and 53-year-old Greg Norman - who finished joint third at this year's Open.

Who should skipper the US at Celtic Manor?
"Watching Greg, Kenny, Vijay, right on down the list, there's no reason I can't compete if I get my confidence back," said Love.

Despite the United States recording their first Ryder Cup victory since 1999, Love doubts skipper Paul Azinger will get another chance to lead the team.

"That would be nice but they've never done that," he said, referring to the PGA of America. "Zinger obviously did a great job.

"As for me, I would love to play on the Ryder Cup team another time or two.

"There are guys like Corey Pavin and Freddie Couples who should be in there ahead of me."
